If you haven’t heard about the alkaline diet, is one that has been in the news lately as it is one of the more popular diet trends among celebrities and fitness professionals.
Like many other diets out there, this diet revolves around the idea that reducing your intake of these acidic foods will come along with positive health benefits such as increased bone density, balancing of hormonal levels, and the reduction of chronic pain.
We’ve all been told that following a diet that consists of healthy and nutritious foods is the key to optimal health however doing so is easier said than done. The first step is being able to properly identify the types of foods want to include in our diet, which unfortunately many of us fail at doing so.
The first thing you need to know here is that just because a food may taste acidic, doesn’t necessarily mean that it will have that effect on the body. What we mean by this is that we want to avoid foods that increased the acidity of the blood, and not necessarily acidic foods themselves.
A prime example of this are citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes and oranges. These foods are commonly referred to as acidic foods because of their taste however eating these foods can cause the blood to be slightly alkaline, which is beneficial to our health.
This is a very important distinction to make and realize before you go trying to determine which foods you should and shouldn’t be eating. Again this all comes down to the fact that they have on the pH levels of blood and not in how acidic they taste.
These are the foods you want to be eating are going to be ones which fall mainly in to the vegetable category, along with some fruits. On the other hand you want to be limiting your intake of dairy products, meats, grains and alcohol for example has these foods tend to make our blood more acidic.
With all this being said why do we want our blood to be more alkaline than acidic? What potential health risks come along with acidic blood?
One of the major issues with eating foods which makes the blood more acidic is that this in turn tends to lower our bone density. This has to do with equilibrium in the body, and that the body tends to excrete more calcium from the system when the blood is acidic as opposed to being alkaline.
When excess calcium is excreted from the system, the body uses a calcium found in our bones to make up the difference. This is because calcium is very important in various functions within our cells and in the ability of our organs to function, especially in the case of the heart.
To solve this issue you should look to eat more plant based foods, especially dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, collard greens and lettuce as these foods are very high in calcium among many other important nutrients we need.
The foods that we eat have an enormous effect on the pH of our urine. When we consume more acidic foods, in turn the acidity of our urine also increases. This is because of the filtering that is done by our kidneys, which intense two flush some of this unwanted material out of the body.
Over time having consistently acidic blood can cause the buildup of kidney stones and gallstones. This again is because of the kidneys role in the removal of urine from the system, and the gallbladders role in the digestive process.
These types of stones are usually removed from the system through natural means, meaning that you have to pass them through urination which can be one of the most painful experiences you can ever suffer from, and definitely something you want to avoid at all costs.
Another huge impact that in acidic diet has on our health is that can potentially alter the body’s ability to produce hormones. One hormone in particular that it really seems to affect is that all of human growth hormone, which is our growth hormone that our body uses to perform various functions.
This hormone is used to grow various types of tissue, and is also involved in the production and functioning of various other types of hormones such as testosterone for example.
Again this is an issue that comes about after prolonged exposure to this acidic blood. But this also means is that the effects are reversible through a change in diet, which should revolve around eating plant based whole foods.
